About the pilot
The Maltese pilot focuses on improving dementia awareness, reducing stigma and strengthening support across different population groups. It responds to limited public understanding, persistent misconceptions and stigma in community and healthcare settings. Activities include structured awareness events and information sessions supported by educational toolkits developed with European partners, as well as educational and communication materials adapted to different age groups and sectors. Implementation takes place in Active Ageing Centres, mental health day centres, nursing homes, schools and public engagement settings in collaboration with organisations including the Malta Dementia Society. The pilot aims to promote a more informed, inclusive and supportive environment for people living with dementia and their caregivers.
Objectives
Primary objective
To increase public awareness and reduce dementia-related stigma within Maltese society through coordinated, multisectoral activities.
Expected outcomes
An evaluation questionnaire will be distributed after each educational session to collect participants’ views and experiences. It will assess the quality and relevance of the content, clarity and effectiveness of presentations, perceived increases in knowledge, attitudes towards dementia and stigma, satisfaction with the organisation of events, and suggestions for improvement or future topics.

Lessons learnt
Low public awareness and persistent dementia-related stigma remain important challenges in both community and healthcare settings. Different audiences require approaches adapted to their existing knowledge and attitudes. Strong cross-sector collaboration and standardised European educational toolkits facilitate implementation. Ongoing targeted activities are recommended instead of isolated events, and healthcare professionals should remain a priority audience because stigma is also present in care settings.
Sustainability and transferability
Educational materials should be translated into Maltese to maximise their reach and address language barriers. Awareness activities should be incorporated into routine programmes delivered by AACC to healthcare professionals and schools and by the Malta Dementia Society to caregivers, supporting continuity and long-term impact.
Health literacy
The pilot promotes health literacy through accessible, evidence-informed and participatory approaches to dementia and brain health. It supports greater awareness, challenges stigma and improves understanding of how to care for people living with dementia, encouraging informed attitudes, better communication and more confident decision-making.
