About the pilot
This pilot aims to identify modifiable dementia risk factors in adults aged 50 years and older in Primary Care settings in Asturias and Extremadura (Spain). Participants without previous cognitive impairment diagnosis will be recruited through collaborating physicians and nurses. The intervention combines dementia risk assessment using the CAIDE questionnaire, cognitive screening with the BOCA tool, and additional measures related to diabetes control and sleep. Participants will receive educational materials focused on brain health and dementia prevention. Primary Care professionals will also receive specific educational resources and training materials. The pilot evaluates feasibility, acceptability, appropriateness, perceived usefulness and sustainability of the intervention using standardized implementation questionnaires (AIM, FIM, IAM, TAM/PU-4). The pilot is designed as a scalable and community-based prevention model integrated into routine Primary Care practice.
Objectives
Primary objective
To identify adults with modifiable dementia risk factors through CAIDE-based risk assessment and BOCA cognitive screening in Primary Care settings.
Secondary objectives
To improve dementia prevention awareness among Primary Care professionals and participants. To evaluate feasibility, acceptability and usefulness of the intervention toolkit. To explore scalable community-based prevention strategies for dementia risk reduction.
Expected outcomes
Increased awareness of modifiable dementia risk factors among participants and professionals, successful implementation of CAIDE and BOCA screening in Primary Care, high acceptability and feasibility of the intervention, and generation of a scalable prevention model for future regional implementation.
Results
Not available yet. Pilot implementation is expected to start after ethics approval and completion of operational deployment in Primary Care centres.
Lessons learnt
Early implementation highlighted the importance of simple workflows integrated into routine consultations, user-friendly digital tools for older adults, and strict separation between identifiable patient data and research datasets for GDPR compliance.
Sustainability and transferability
The pilot is designed as a low-cost and scalable intervention integrated into existing Primary Care workflows. The methodology, educational materials and digital screening tools could be transferred to other Spanish regions and adapted to different European healthcare systems.
Health literacy
The pilot promotes awareness and understanding of modifiable dementia risk factors through educational materials, preventive counselling and cognitive health information targeted at citizens, caregivers and Primary Care professionals.
