Pilot study of FINGER online training for professionals and older adults

TERVEYDEN JA HYVINVOINNIN LAITOS FI

About the pilot

The main objective of the pilot is to enhance awareness and understanding of multidomain dementia prevention strategies among both healthcare professionals and older adults at risk of developing dementia and/or stroke. A pilot intervention targeting healthcare professionals includes a web-based training package developed in collaboration with the Age Institute. Training is based on the FINGER model, including guidance on physical activity, nutrition, cognitive activity, and vascular risk management. Healthcare professionals will complete the online training and provide structured feedback on its content and acceptability. A pilot intervention targeting older adults includes the web-based educational program “FINGER ABC” to promote brain health and reduce dementia risk among older adults through accessible, evidence-based lifestyle education. Professionals in stakeholder organisations will distribute the FINGER ABC training link and feedback survey.

Objectives

Primary objective

The main objective of the pilot is to enhance awareness and understanding of multidomain dementia prevention strategies among both healthcare professionals and older adults at risk of developing dementia and/or stroke

Expected outcomes

The pilot is expected to enhance healthcare professionals’ competence in brain health promotion and dementia risk reduction by translating scientific evidence into practice. Pilot makes the FINGER model for brain health promotion more widely known and accessible and fosters a broader understanding of multidomain prevention strategies. The pilot is also expected to increase awareness among older adults regarding the possibilities for promoting brain health and preventing dementia, empowering them to make informed lifestyle choices that support cognitive well-being.

Sustainability and transferability

The pilot produces evidence-based educational materials (online training) that can be easily integrated into routine primary care, hospital health promotion activities, and community services. Collaboration with Age Institute ensures the training platform remains operational even after the end of JADE Health project. National and local stakeholders will support future scale-up.

Health literacy

The pilot will enhance knowledge, awareness and informed decision-making related to dementia, brain health and stroke prevention through the development and dissemination of an evidence-based online training for both professionals and older adults.
