Department for Active Ageing and Community Care (AACC), from Malta Introduced JADE Health Project at the Dementia Care Symposium: Empowering Minds: Innovation and Compassion in Dementia Care

The Symposium gave a global view of dementia care and highlighted the importance of international collaboration and strategies to overcome the growing challenges of dementia and included various  Dementia Care session to explore cutting-edge initiatives transforming the field, from brain health clinics focusing on early detection so that participants could gain insight into pioneering approaches aiming at improving quality of life for those living with dementia.

JADE Health Joint Action addressing DEmentia and HEALTH – was honoured to be highlighted in the framework of the event. Dr. Lara Camilleri (Department of Active Ageing and Community Care, Malta), gave an overview of our JA in her presentation titled “Brain Health Clinic in Malta”. Attendees could visit and learn more about our project in the coffee break at the information desk that was set up to offer leaflets and information to anyone who was interested and wished to gather more information on the JADE Health project. Our “sister” project Care4Elders_EU4H project another European program promoting best practices was also referenced at the event.

A subsequent presentation focused on cognitive stimulating activities which are carried out by the Malta Dementia Society. The importance of preserving functionality through activities was emphasized from an occupational therapy perspective.

Further discussions explored mental capacity in dementia care, while another presentation shared research findings on the experiences and expectations of persons living with early-stage dementia. A panel discussion with caregivers of persons with dementia was also carried out which provided a niche for caregivers to share their personal experiences and challenges, which also served as an eye-opener to all attendees.

Additionally, the symposium included an awards ceremony which honoured outstanding contributions in the field.

The symposium served as a hub for professionals, caregivers, and advocates to explore advancements in dementia care. Attendees gained valuable insights from international experts and individuals with lived experiences, fostering collaboration and inspiring meaningful change in dementia practices.

Following the symposium, feedback was gathered, resulting in a positive outcome. It provided valuable insights for further improvement, along with suggestions for future initiatives.

JADE Health Joint Action  is grateful for the opportunity to be included in such a transformative conversation about dementia care. We are excited to carry on implementing our project with dedicated stakeholders like AACC.
