At the National Dementia Conference, “From Insight to Impact”, held on 30 May 2026, Dr. Stephen Abela, Consultant Geriatrician, presented key findings from Malta’s contribution to a Work Package 10 survey on dementia awareness and stigma reduction.  

The event focused on local and international updates in dementia research. The opening addresses were given by Dr. Renzo Degabriele, Permanent Secretary for Health and Ageing, and Dr. Steve Agius, Chief Executive Officer of the Department for Active Ageing and Community Care. Over 170 participants attended the conference, including healthcare professionals, researchers, policymakers, caregivers, and dementia care advocates. 

Key activities and progress so far achieved within Jade Health were highlighted, as well as Malta’s involvement and contribution through three work packages: 

• WP6 on early detection of cognitive disorders,  
• WP7 on dementia and stroke prevention, and  
• WP10 on vulnerable groups and dementia-related stigma.  

were underlined as efforts that aim to improve public understanding, raise professional awareness, and support people who face barriers to care. 

Dr. Stephen Abela in his presentation titled “A Survey on the Awareness and Stigma of Dementia – JADE Health project” presented results of the Dementia Awareness Questionnaire developed by WP 10, a survey that was designed to be filled out voluntarily in order to receive information from people with lived experience; patients with mild or moderate dementia and/or by their family members, caregivers across several countries.  

The answers received from Malta showcased that limited public awareness and ongoing stigma still exists both at community level and healthcare settings, as many respondents had reported unfair treatment and urged for continued education and action.  

Responses also reflected dementia’s significant impact on individuals and families, affecting emotional wellbeing, independence, and relationships. Participants involved in the survey called for better public education, targeted awareness campaigns, and stronger caregiver support, including training, respite services, and paid leave.  

Dr. Abela stated that findings of the questionnaire “will help us to guide national strategies, future actions, and design future awareness campaigns as tackling stigma remains a key priority.”  

The conference closed with an award ceremony. Best Care Team Award went to the Dementia Intervention Team and Best Researchers Award was received by Dr Anthony Scerri and Dr Charles Scerri, who are members of JADE Health stakeholder network.
